Originating in China, the Five Elements Theory has endured for more than 2000 years. It continues to influence both traditional and modern Chinese culture in areas like warfare, medicine, forecasting and business management.

TCM pracititioner, Dr. Stanley Cheung offers this course series as an introduction to the fundamental knowledge of Five Elements Theory including:

  • What is the Five Elements Theory?

    Based on observations of the natural world, ancient Chinese people recognized continuous patterns of transformation and change in the universe.

    Initially, these observations were interpreted using yin yang logic, but later these interpretations were expanded using a new theory called the five elements.
    The five elements theory evolved from the study of various processes, functions, and phenomena of nature.

    The theory asserts substances can be divided into one of five basic elements: wood, fire, water, metal and earth, which contain their own specific characteristics and properties. Today, the five elements theory is still used as a tool for analysis the change , and as a method for analyzing changes of natural phenomena.

    Session 1: Fundamentals of the 5 Elements

    Learn what the 5 Elements is all about – the history, theory, function and importance in traditional Chinese medicine. This session will set the foundation, giving you a good basic understanding – allowing you to understand and apply the material taught in the later sessions. Each element has its own characteristics and associations with different aspect of nature, such as direction, season, color, shape, and so on. The five elements, earth, metal, wood, fire, and water, are believed to be the fundamental roots of the universe, between which interactions occur. Each Chinese element has its own characteristics and associations and each plays an important role in the balance of the universe. No element is stronger nor more important than another, and each has its own strengths and weaknesses. According to the Five Elements Theory, all things arise from and return to the universe and are composed of these elements.

    Session 2: Calculating Your Element

    Similar to astrology, you can find out what element you are, and therefore use it to benefit yourself and those around you. Learn the methods of calculating your element so you can apply the 5 element system knowledge to yourself and others around you.

    Session 3: Calculating Your Element From Your Birthday

    Everybody belongs to one of the 12 Chinese zodiac signs and a 12-year cycle according to the year in which they were born. One of the five elements is associated with each of the Chinese zodiac signs and 12-year cycles. Chinese astrology asserts that personality and luck are determined by both zodiac sign (element) and 12-year cycle element, while life force (or qi) is determined by birth date and time.

    Session 4: How We Can Benefit From Our Element

The previous sessions knowledge will build up  Finding out your element can give you insight into your personality traits, strengths, and weaknesses. For example, a fire element individual is passionate and enthusiastic, yet susceptible to mood swings and aggressive. You will learn and understand how your element affects your interaction with yourself, others, and the universe.
