Integrative Manual Therapy for the Autonomic Nervous System & Related Disorders with Advanced Strain & Counterstrain Technique: The Treatment of Smooth Muscle Spasm
This 2-day course will present Advanced Strain and Counterstrain Technique, developed by Dr. Sharon Weiselfish-Giammatteo, PhD, PT, IMT,C. Advanced Strain and Counterstrain Technique builds on the concepts of Strain and Counterstrain Technique, which reduces and eliminates protective muscle spasm in skeletal muscles, but applies these concepts to the involuntary or smooth muscles throughout the body. It is common knowledge that a skeletal muscle, like the biceps muscle, can go into protective muscle spasm. What is less widely known, is that protective muscle spasm also occurs within smooth muscle tissue. Smooth muscle fibers line all the vessels in our body (including arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels), and lie within or around many structures in the body, including organs, diaphragms, the eyes and ears and more. When smooth muscle goes into spasm, it causes the vessels in our body to become rigid and inflexible affecting such things as blood pressure and overall circulation. In turn, this affects ranges of motion and joint mobility of neighboring joints because the body tries to protect the compromised vessel. These positional release techniques are easy to learn and are invaluable treatment techniques for any rehabilitation program.
