What happens when you are exposed to long-term stress?
Today we activate this primary instinct although we don’t face a life threatening situation and although we can neither run nor fight. Instead we face modern day saber-tooth tiger – for example our demanding boss – raging in a meeting and all we have to do (against our nature) is to “control ourselves” and to “deal with it”. This kind of unresolved emotional conflicts and suppressed negative emotions cause severe levels of stress. As a result, our body’s natural “fight or flight” response may be stuck in a continuous on position. If you don’t learn to turn it off , stress can have serious consequences for your health.
The longer the ongoing stress lasts, the worse it turns out to be for your body and mind. Following symptoms can occur:
○ Decreasing energy levels and constant feeling of fatigue
○ Unable to concentrate
○ Easily irritable for no good reason
○ Headache or migraine
○ Chronic cold or inflammation
○ High blood pressure
According to APA's 2012 Stress in America survey, stress keeps more than 40 percent of adults lying awake at night, what even increases the symptoms during daytime as the body has no time to recover. According to a study conducted by the Oregon State University, individuals who tend to live a more stressful life have a 50% higher chance of dying. Stress may also cause sequelae from overeating, extensive smoking, alcohol abuse or other harmful habits people develop to cope with stress. When it becomes as severe as stress starts interfering with your ability to live a normal life for an extended period, stress itself can become life threatening, as the number of raising people affected by burnout or the alarming numbers of Karoshi victims demonstrate.
Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system and releases neurochemical messenger molecules triggering biochemical changes in the body’s homeostatic mechanisms. Those changes support the body’s self healing abilities and promote thereupon physical and emotional well-being.
Research (Hui, 2010) has shown that acupuncture treatment significantly benefit anxiety disorders and depression symptoms as specific areas of the brain are stimulated which are known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress. Furthermore, acupuncture promotes relaxation of the “analytical brain” which is responsible for anxiety and worry. Chinese herbs help your body to restore the balance in your organs and to overcome mental pain. The prescription can be modified, allowing to tailor your treatment to your conditions and needs.
Aromatherapy utilizes naturally extracted aromatic essences from the roots, leaves, seeds or blossoms of plants to improve the health of body, mind and spirit.
Aromatherapy massage utilizes aromatic essences as the skin absorbs the essential oils while they are breathed in at the same time. It is used to treat a wide range of conditions: It can help to relieve pain, stress and depression. Several essential oils such as lavender, orange, lemon, rose, sandalwood, bergamot and others have also shown to relieve anxiety and fear.
Energetic Kinesiology is a complementary alternative healing therapy that uses calming and muscle testing techniques to unlock and assess the wisdom of your body to find information about physical/ structural symptoms and mental/ emotional conditions. Muscle monitoring is used to detect imbalances in tissues or organs and to indentify how stress impacts on your body.
In today’s fast paced society we continuously expose our bodies to stress. The endless list of stress factors trigger a fight flight response in our endocrine system that releases adrenaline and cortisol, and simultaneously reduces the digestive and immune system. Ongoing overuse of this fight flight response is nowadays recognized to be the leading cause for depression.
One of the most important benefits of Kinesiology is its ability for reducing external and internal stress in your physical and mental state and creating the balance you need.
Shiatsu is a form of traditional Japanese bodywork that aims to release tensions from body and mind. It stimulates the body’s natural healing ability by applying gentle pressure to specific points across the body.
Our Shiatsu practitioner aims to identify and correct imbalances in the body by means of physical stimulation, stretch and joint mobilization techniques. Shiatsu Massage helps to restore your hormonal balance in reducing stress and in correcting your cortisol levels, and is beneficial with the following:
○ Removes toxins from your body
○ Improves circulation
○ Stimulates reproductive glands

“Its not stress that kills us, it is our reaction to it.”
– Hans Selye
What is the ‘fight or flight’ response?
From an evolutionary perspective our inherent “fight or flight” response was extremely valuable for the survival of the human being. When we had to run from our perceived threat, a sequence of firing nerve cells and chemical release prepared our bodies for either running or fighting. These patterns caused our body to undergo a series of considerable changes:
○ Increased stress hormone levels
○ Accelerated heartbeat & increased respiratory rate
○ Increased muscle tension
○ Deteriorated digestion
○ Intensified awareness
○ Shut down of the immune system
Do It Yourself - How can I reduce stress on my own?
The American Psychological Association recommends:
